Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Officers state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered numerous other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities said they were working "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.
A high-ranking official commented the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the death of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
