Cowboys Proprietor Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Fans
The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.
“That was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Context for Proprietor Fines
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, possesses an approximate wealth of $16 billion, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
Recent Issues and Media Spotlight
The incident follows a controversial offseason for Jones, who faced significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star defensive player Parsons to the Packers.
Additionally, Jones was a central figure in a Netflix documentary that explored his influence in developing the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, despite its recent championship drought.
The league’s decision to fine Jones highlights its continuing initiative to uphold proper behavior among all franchise representatives, regardless of their position or financial standing.
